Hosted By: The Broke and The Bookish

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and The Bookish, where we list our top ten according to a topic of the week. I'm actually not participating in this weekly, only because I know that for some of the topics I really can't come up with a list of ten. For future topics though, check them out here.

Top Ten Books I'm Not Sure I Want To Read

So this week I get to tell you guys which books I'm hesitant to read because of the hype or mixed messages I've heard, or ones that I've bought but don't really think I want to read anymore.

  1. Bloodlines Series by Richelle Mead - there is one reason why I have not read this, and still am not ready to read it. I haven't forgiven Richelle for doing what she did to Adrian and I still hate the ending of the Vampire Academy series.
  2. Divergent Series by Veronica Roth - yet another well-loved series that I've avoid, originally because of the hype but now because someone spoiled the entire series for me. It was such a major part of the last novel that now I'm just angry and think it's not worth reading the series anymore.
  3. We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver - it's supposed to be a great psychological thriller, but I've read comments on it being too explicit and disturbing to really read. My friend watched the movie though and her reaction has made me intrigued to actually stomach it.
  4. Legend Series by Marie Lu - I know, what a surprise. This series is one of THE most hyped up and loved books on the blogosphere/booktube but every single time I pick it up to read the blurb, something just makes me put it down. It's suppose to be dystopian and all but I just can't help feel that it's a predictable romance. Don't kill me please.
  5. Lolita by Vladmir Nabokov - I bought this curious to see how a touch subject became such a classic piece of writing, and quickly got disturbed. Not sure if I want to reach for it again.

  6. The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black - I always find myself adding this to my cart and only to remove it at the checkout. I've heard its good, but I've also seen some average ratings for it so I'm in two minds.
  7. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz - it's good, I know it's good but is it really for me? That's the question I ask myself whenever I look at this book - is it the most suitable book for me?
  8. These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner - I loveeee the cover but I'm hesitant on the story line. A Romeo & Juliet plot set in the future just seems weird to me, especially since I'm not a fan of Romeo & Juliet the original. Hmmmm.
  9. Burial Rites by Hannah Kent - this is an acclaimed Australian novel, and usually I jump at the chance to support any fellow Aussie but I. just. don't. know. about this one.
  10. If I Stay by Gayle Forman - this is pretty low on my list because on the one hand, I want to read it so I can watch the movie, but on the other I think it'll be fine if I watch the movie and not read it all. It's just one of those things where the movie might make up my mind for me.

Even after writing this post I'm still very unsure about all ten of these, help! If you think I should read any of them leave a comment down below telling me why - I would really appreciate it!

What's Your Top Ten?

  1. Ah, Divergent is well beloved--but if you mean that the main spoiler was revealed---I would be on the hunt. It is really a great series but the even with the spoiler, there is a lot of great writing in the series.
Legends--gah! I hated the book. It is a shame because the cover was well made and the printing in the book was quality and unique. The content was lacking and unfortunate.

    1. yes main spoiler in Alleigant, I wanted to kill the person! >:( Oh, you're the first person I know who's said that, everybody else loves it! Thanks for letting me know though!

  2. Divergent has such a brilliant beginning but it's all down hill from there. Save yourself the trouble and avoid it. And that's coming from someone who absolutely loved the first book. The Legend series, These Broken Stars and If I Stay are 3 books that I absolutely loved so I would definitely recommend those three! Aristotle and Dante is one I have wanted to read for the longest time but haven't got to it yet. Here's my TTT.

    1. Ok, maybe I'll just stick to watching the movies then so I'm still in the loop. Mmm, I think I'll give These Broken Stars a shot because it's so pretty! Thanks for reading :)

  3. Spoilers are the worst! I was spoiled for Allegiant as well.. it took me a lot of time before I picked up the book. I would say that Divergent is worth the read, but the sequels aren't fantastic. I liked Legend, but wasn't in love with it.

    1. I was so frustrated, I couldn't believe that I knew! Mm, I might just borrow a library copy and see if I like it or not. Same goes for Legends. Thanks for popping by :)

  4. 1. Hahaha! I actually enjoyed VA a lot more than Bloodlines (not sure why, but I don't care a lot for the Adrian/Sydney romance and dislike some of the secondary characters), but it's been vice-versa for everyone else. If it's Adrian you're worried about, you'll definitely enjoy Bloodlines more since he's a lot happier here. I think. I haven't read books 4-5 yet. >_<

    2. Book one was really enjoyable, book two was okay, and I didn't even bother with book three. I've heard it's really bad.

    4. Dystopian books are ones I will either love or hate. In the case of Legend, I absolutely adored this series! The romance, yes, it's predictable, but holy crap. Feels, Tracey. Feels. Especially in the last book. T_T

    6. I tried this one, but I put it down after a few chapters. I don't know--it starts off interestingly, but I'm not a fan of the writing. I'm not sure if I'll ever continue this again.

    7. I've been asking the same question about this! Everyone loves it, and I can't even begin to count how many readers have recommended this to me, but it doesn't seem like something I'd normally pick up on my own.

    8. I really loved this one, especially the beginning. The end was quite confusing to me and I was going a bit "WTF is happening?!" but overall, it was an enjoyable read. The characters were the best aspect of the book. And it's pretty on my shelf. ;)

    10. I was on the so-so side for book one (pretty boring, but it did make me think about life), but book two was really good. Maybe watch the movie first and decide whether or not it'd be your type of read. :) I've done that with plenty of books.

    Thanks for sharing, girl!

    1. I love your comment :) such an interesting read!

I'm such a massive Adrian and Rose fan though that I don't think I can read about him and Sydney - I know how picky! I shall invest some time into the books that you've said are great to read. Thanks!

  5. I felt the same way about The Coldest Girl in Coldtown, but I finally read it and thought it was SO good, and I thought I was over vampires

  6. I REALLY REALLY REALLY liked Divergent so I couldn't but recommend it to you. :P Legend...was good but the thing is that it was predictable. I'm currently reading Aristotle and Dante and it's good. It has a beautiful atmosphere. *.* Also read If I Stay and loved it. Hahha, it seems that every book I read on your list I liked lol. Hope you give If I Stay AND Divergent a chance. ;)

    1. Hahah, I think it's all the hype that sometimes put me off reading these books because the expectations might not be met. But I'll definitely get around to Divergent sometime later, and I'll probably watch If I Stay to see if I want to read it. Thanks! :)

  7. I totally felt the same way as you after the VA series ended, my poor Adrian :( But you won't regret starting the Bloodlines series, Adrian FINALLY finds happiness and we see him go back to his good old flirty, charismatic way and series just gets better and better!
