Top Ten Tuesday: Books That Surprised Me

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we list our top ten according to the a topic of the week. Check out future topics here

There are always going to be books that exceed your expectations or fall so hard that you're not sure why you even tried in the first place. I share five delightfully surprising books, and five just downright disappoint reads.

Top Five Surprisingly Great Books

1. The Host by Stephanie Meyer
I think my surprise merely comes from the fact that the same author who wrote Twilight wrote this, and I fell in love with it.

2. The Troupe by Robert Jackson Bennett
Absolute favourite read of 2016! The Troupe was one of those TBR books that was about to become something I was going to give away. Thankfully I didn't!

3. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
I knew that it was Ready Player One was popular but because I'm not a huge sci-fi fan I just figured it would be enjoyable. Instead, I am now converted.

4. Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
This entire series was amazing - right from the get go. I thought I got over the whole angel/demon fantasy phase but this sucked me right back in.

5. Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts
I stuck it out for a really long time with Shantaram and I do not regret it one bit. If you want thought provoking and just philosophical, this is the one.

Top Five Surprisingly Disappointing Books

1. Side Effects May Vary by Julie Murphy
I absolutely disliked this so much - from the characters to the story, I was so disappointed that it didn't turn out the way I expected.

2. Finding Audrey by Sophie Kinsella
Finding Audrey was meh. I kept hearing about it but felt really underwhelmed.

If I had to name a book that I despise it would be this one. I was excited after reading Lockhart's other book and now I'm a little scarred.

4. A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas
This is probably along the same lines as The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks but I actually DNF'd ACOMAF because I could not get past how much I was beginning to hate everything that was happening. So sad.

5. You by Caroline Kepnes
I read this awhile back and did not like at all. Now it is a super popular thriller and I'm a little taken back by it.
