The Animal Crossing Book Tag

Sure enough I have found myself caught up in the ISO phenomenon that is Animal Crossing. I'm definitely new to the game, but have watched my brother play it before the Switch release. Surprisingly, I've come to enjoy it quite a lot although my progress in the game is a lot slower than what I've seen from others. Anyways! I saw Jenna from Happy Indulgence complete the tag and had to jump on board.

The Rules
  • Please link back to the original creator of the tag, Bookish Things and Tea
  • Answer the following Animal Crossing themed book questions
  • Feel free to use McKenzie's graphics (which I have), but please don't take credit for them
  • Tag some friends to spread the love!

I've had Anne of Green Gables, both the novel and series (not the Netflix one), on my shelf for awhile now. I keep meaning to read it but have been avoiding it for some reason. The new Netflix adaption has definitely piqued my interest more so it's now moved up on my priority of books to read.

Such a particular question to ask and honestly, not an easy one to answer but I'd have to go with World After, which is a bit of an older read but the second book to the Angel Fall series. To be fair I haven't actually read the ending to this series yet, but whilst the first book was okay, the second book grabbed my attention straight away and finally got me excited about the entirety of the series.

It's hard not to go past the Shade of Magic series with this one, as V.E Scwab takes world-building to such an exciting and creative level. She introduces the notion of parallel worlds, London in this case, with a touch of magic, that makes the world's that much more fun to read about.

I have and will continue to rave about After the Flood, a debut novel from Kassandra Montag that speaks volumes on climate change, the end of the world and what that may mean for us, whilst also exploring themes of sacrifice, loyalty, guilt and family ties. It's a thought-provoking and emotional read. I wrote a full review on it, which you can read here, to know more of what I thought about it.

Is it too easy to say Harry Potter with this one? If I did have to choose another book then Scatterheart is my next choice. I read Scatterheart in year 7 and can't seem to forget how much I really liked it and what it aimed to deliver to readers. It's a gorgeous story of learning to be strong and finding yourself in the midst of trouble, whilst also having a rather heartwarming romance play out. Also, I appreciated that it was set during the colonisation of Australia, just to highlight Australia's history.

If we're talking characters, then Neil Gaiman's American Gods is a standout for its eclectic group of gods that the story involves. They each have such different characteristics that jump out at you and remain memorable, especially Mr. Wednesday and the god who is represented as a baby gangster.

This is such a controversial selection but Sarah J Maas' A Court of Mist and Fury, the whole series really, I could go without and did honestly. I never finished ACOMF because of the direction it was heading and how much it bothered me. Even now I wouldn't think to revisit it. I still like her A Throne of Glass series though so don't @ me just yet.

Where do I even start with this? If we're talking Adult historical fiction, I will always recommend The Other Boleyn Girl because that was the first historical book that introduced me to the genre and made me fall in love with it. I do acknowledge it's dramatisation, based on a lot of speculation, but it made for a rather thrilling read. If we're looking more at YA historical fiction, if you could call it that, then there is The Book Thief, an absolutely beautiful read.

I'm not sure I know enough bloggers who haven't done this to tag them, but please, if you're interested definitely go ahead and share with me! I would love to read your answers.

Quick note: I wrote this post a few months back but for some reason never shared it!

Stay At Home Book Tag

I use to love doing tag videos because they were always a great way to think and discuss some things about reading. This was a particular fun tag to do, with the current climate keeping us inside, which is for the better.

If anything, doing this tag made me realise how much I genuinely miss film YouTube videos and just having fun with it. Also, I have a lot of books I haven't read but need to get too. If you end up doing this tag (written or video) I would love to see it!

I am aware that this situation isn't easy for a lot of people. It is such a strange time and being forced to do things we don't want to - staying at home - is hard to deal with. However, for those who recognise the importance of staying at home and the privilege in doing so, well done on doing your part so that we can all get through this together.

My opinion about this is that, even though I haven't personally come into contact with the virus or know anyone who has been affected by the virus tragically, I still want to be extra cautious as I have family members who are at risk and do not want to do something that can cause anyone harm. I'm also aware that I have the privilege of staying home being bored. There are people who don't have homes to protect them from the risk or access to items/avenues to relieve them of boredom. Or people whose home conditions poses as a danger to them and now can't escape this toxicity/threat. I also recognise the essential workers who aren't staying at home so that we can, doing their best to ensure that the community is safe.

Hopefully we are able to re-emerge together stronger than before. Take care everyone!

Hope You Enjoyed the Video!

The Aesthetically Pleasing Book Tag

The Aesthetically Pleasing Book Tag is really to look at aesthetically pleasing books. The amount of times I've made a cover buy is actually ridiculous, but I'm super excited to do this tag and share with you guys some of the books on my shelves that are absolutely gorgeous.

This tag was created by Book Syrup on YouTube, check it out here.

Best Colour Combo

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
This takes the cake for matching my favourite colour, minted green, with the cutest pink!

Best Typography

Peter Pan by J.M Barrie
Just look at it. That calligraphy and the colouring. Dead.

Best Simplistic Cover

Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
How ironic that Uglies comes out as the prettiest.

Best Endpages

Summer and Bird by Katherine Catmull
It's so simple, and yet so elegant.

Best Map

Legacy of Kings by Eleanor Herman
I'm not a huge fantasy reader so this was really hard to choose, but I do like these illustrations.

Best Naked Hardback

Dorothy Must Die Series by Danielle Paige
I found these two so creative for having the protagonists silhouettes on the front.

Best Back Cover

Throne of Glass Series by Sarah J. Maas
Boss as Calaena.

Best Chapter Headers

The Fairyland Series by Catherynne M. Valente
This series has the cutest chapter headings!

Best Illustrations

I was so close to choosing This Monster Calls but cannot overlook the illustrated versions of Harry Potter.

Best Spine

Harry Potter Series by J.K Rowling
I'm cheating but this edition of Harry Potter put together makes the Hogwarts Castle, and you cannot tell me that is not pretty.

Best Cover On My Shelves

I couldn't decide so now I'm featuring both of them. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, the entire series even, just has such a haunting cover and the feel of it is nice - it's like a velvet material. Alice in Wonderland is just eccentric and so apt for the story.

Feel free to do this tag and leave a link below so I can check out other covers and possibly go through a cover buy binge - as per usual.

Beauty and the Beast Book Tag

The release of Beauty and the Beast prompted me to go find a tag about it to do. And then comes along Kirsty and the Cat Read's Tag and here it is! If you guys want to get on board, do it. It was such a fun tag!!

A popular troupe, theme or setting you will never get bored of reading

I'm all about family mysteries, I don't know if it's that popular, but generations of mysteries that suddenly is revealed and blow everyone's mind. Including mind. Kate Morton is the best for these!

A book you bought for it's beautiful cover that's just as beautiful inside too

I went to re-read my review for Fairytales for Wilde Girls and the first sentence was "the contents within [this] is as beautiful as its cover." Pretty much sums it up doesn't it. It was magical, whimsical and yet, every time I look at it there is such a saddening feel I get because of how hauntingly beautiful it is.

A book you didn't expect much from but pleasantly surprised you

I feel like you guys are going to be sick of me raving on and on about The Troupe, but this is such an underrated read and needs more attention!! I did not expect it to be so much more than what the blurb let on, and I loved every moment of it.

A book everyone loves but you don't

I feel like I'm going to be shot for even saying this but I did not and still do not like the A Court of Mist and Fury, and that extends to the entire series actually. I just prefer not to read about characters, grow to like them and then have everything taken away from me in the next book. So frustrating!

A loyal sidekick you can't help but love more than the counterpart

I don't classify Jem as a sidekick per se, but I do find that I love him as much as Will - probably not more, but pretty much the same. Which made reading the series so much harder!

A book that helped you through a difficult time or that taught you something valuable

Surprisingly, Dr Seuss' Oh, The Places You Go, really gave me a lot to think about. I received this as a gift from one of my teachers just after graduating and it put everything into perspective for me. I wasn't in a great place in high school but the world is so vast I never really know where I could go.

A book or series that you weren't into at first but picked up towards the end

Code Name Verity was one of those books that I started off thinking it was okay, but then I fell in love with the storyline and the characters. I loved that it was a friendship novel and that it was so touching at the end.

A fictional character you'd love to have over for dinner

So many characters to choose from BUTTT if I had to choose it would be the Mad Hatter. Hands down that would be the most interesting dinner of all time.
